FRAME(WORKS)

2019

Frame(works) explores the conditions and contexts of contemporary arts as a starting point for understanding the frameworks that exist within the art world. The project is situated within the premise that systems and frameworks can be analysed and unpacked through careful structural analysis. Through video, installation and paintings, the artist investigates the roles artists, institutions and audience play in continuing the narrative of contemporary arts.

The world of Hindu mythology offers many characters and narratives to the world. Perhaps the most treasured of them all is the classical epic, Ramayana for Southeast Asia.

The character of the “trickster”, a supernormal and yet subhuman persevere in the myths the world over.

In “Ravan’s Mask”, a timed performance piece with sculpture, the contemporary artist as a Myanmar born Southeast Asian seeks redemption (again) for this “collective personality”.

Who we are, why we are and where we belong are the fundamental questions of life. In asking these questions, we scrape the surface of many deep-seated issues such as ethnic violence, religious turmoil and cultural imperialism.


 Identity is not constant. As he discovers the changes that he has made and the changes that were made unto him, he draws from and mourns for the past that was left behind. He looks at the present that will continue to shape him in time to come.

PAINTINGS

Green Bar is the beginning of a series of interior scenes that responds to the artist’s journey through the Arts scene of Singapore. Specifically, the painting depicts a voyeuristic perspective of an observer who is both detached and involved simultaneously.

I AM ART continues with the artist’s self-referential look within his own paintings. The painting shows the night of Art Stage “I AM ART” launch party held in The Warehouse Hotel, 28th August 2018. As both an onlooker and a participant, the artist’s own voice and identity splits across the myriad social and economic webs that is built upon the frameworks of the Arts in Singapore.
